Dedication
This memoir is dedicated to my four children, Denise, Bret, Darin and Brock. It seems that so many parents have tales of disappointment regarding their offspring. I am not one of those unfortunate parents. My children are all upstanding and leading successful lives in this somewhat difficult world. Denise has recently retired as a Colonel from the United States Air Force. Bret is a co-founder of Speaker Fulfillment Services. Darin is an Associate Professor at Ohio University in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Assistant Chair for Undergraduate Studies. And Brock is Manager of Eagle Ridge Civil Engineering Services.
In 1997 I lived in Germany for a year and while there I wrote the following poem.
How Proud Am I
How proud am I for what I’ve wrought
Of sons and daughter in this time?
Reflecting here in this foreign spot
On their achievements, I’m sublime.
Now, if they’re asked which is noblest,
Between them there is no accord.
For each; ‘Tis nobler than the rest,
To build, teach, sell, or bear the sword.
One says;
Structures vital to daily life
Are roads and such to get around.
It’s building these that hones the knife,
That cuts the path to higher ground.
One says;
Chemical reactions are how
The molecule’s powers unfold.
By teaching this to students now
The future’s new won’t be like old.
One says;
Marketing is the force unfurled
That makes the economy grow.
Selling tools for a high-tech world
Advances us all from status quo.
One says;
Pentagon’s role is planning the guard,
So that the others can succeed.
Really it’s simply not that hard
To see who serves the greater need.
I say;
Credit’s due me, who gave them start,
Who set them on their roads to fame.
But if they stumble in their part,
I don’t expect to get the blame.
Truth is;
Credit is theirs alone to take,
With all four giving the good try.
So this rhyming tribute I make,
Thus you needn’t ask, “How Proud Am I.”
