Preface
Why write a memoir? I am not famous nor am I related to anyone famous. I am not a survivor of a life threatening disease. I have not witnessed a major earth shattering event. Why write a memoir? Is it to get rich? Fat chance of that (but it would be nice to break even). To pass on all the wisdom I’ve acquired over the years? That would take less than a single sheet of paper.
No, it’s a little bit of a lot of things.
- For my family.
- For Carroll friends from the past.
- For current Carroll residents.
- For the general public.
- For the long shot dream that it might sell more than a dozen copies.
- To stay busy in my old age.
- Because it is fun to work with an old friend.
- To learn some new book producing skills.
- Just to prove to myself that I can do it.
Whatever the reason for starting this endeavor I’ve found that it is a great way to escape from the depressing news of now to the carefree days of then.
I want to express special thanks to Carolyn Fell McCoy, who after having no contact with me for fifty years, agreed to be my volunteer proofreader, editor, critic and advisor. She has made this project a joy and substantially improved the final result.
Also thanks to David Cochran for providing some much needed technical assistance.
And thanks to Ray Skinner and his editorial support staff for their excellent book the History of Carroll High School. I referred to it many times.
Also the following books were influential and helpful.
- Bob Greene’s Late Edition: A Love Story
- Tristine Rainer’s Your Life as Story
- McDougal Littell’s The Writer’s Guide
- David R. Contosta’s Lancaster, Ohio 1800-2000
- Paul Miller’s Lancaster, Ohio What a Town, What a Time!
- Carroll Centennial Committee’s Carroll Centennial Souvenir Program
